Lilla Lidingöbron
With its increased span and enhanced accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and moped riders, the 750-meter-long Lilla Lidingöbron is one of Sweden's longest rail bridges. As travel between Stockholm and Lidingö municipalities is expected to rise, the new bridge provides improved accessibility and safety, as well as increased frequency for tram traffic on the Lidingöbanan.

The new bridge increase accessibility
The approximately 100-year-old Lidingöbron presented both risks and problems for bridge traffic. With significant renovation and maintenance needs, a new bridge was not only more economical and safer but also reduced the risk of traffic disruptions and increased accessibility for commuters, allowing more options for local transit, cycling, and walking.
Challenging groundworks
The new bridge is a 750-meter-long post-tensioned concrete bridge with 15 spans and 16 bridge piers, whose foundations are anchored in the water. This posed a technical challenge due to the complex foundation work required. The bridge was anchored into the bedrock using 198 steel piles, each 800 millimeters in diameter, driven down to a depth of 40 meters to reach the bedrock.

Surveying challenges
The bridge is a total of 16 meters wide, with 7.4 meters allocated for pedestrians, cyclists, and moped users, and 8 meters for tram traffic. The bridge is low with a sail-free height of 5.5 and 7 meters, and wider to meet the increasing demand for public transportation and sustainable travel. On the Lidingö side, the bridge splits into two branches, seamlessly integrating with the existing road bridge. This required significant effort, including high-quality measurements and modeling, to ensure proper alignment and functionality.
